Types of Bond

The three fundamental types of chemical bonding to be discussed in this lesson are:

Ionic/Electrovalent Bond:

This chemical combination involves the transfer of electron from one atom(usually metallic) to another(usually non-metallic). E.g ionic or electrovalent bond exist in Nacl, Naf, Mgcl2 e.t.c

Covalent Bond:

This chemical combination involves sharing of electron between the atoms e.g covalent bond exist in H2O, NH3, etc

Co-Ordinate or Dative Bond:

In this type of chemical bonding, the shared electron is contributed by only one participant. Such a pair of electron is called shared pair and the one that does not involve in bonding is called lone pair. E.g co-ordinate bonding exist in ammonium ion, NH4+ , NO3+
